THE curtain has come down on another cricket season during which Somerset have again been a considerable force to be reckoned with in domestic competitions.

In the Vitality Blast T20 Somerset qualified for the quarter final play where, against Yorkshire at Headingley, they looked to heading out of the competition, before Craig Overton scored an unbeaten 79 off 30 balls to see the Cidermen through to Finals Day. Sadly at Edgbaston there was no repeat of the previous year’s success and Somerset lost out to Northamptonshire in the semi final.

In the Metro Bank One Day Cup while they failed to reach the latter stages, with a side depleted by The 100, Somerset once again put in some strong performances including a memorable victory over Surrey at Taunton.

Somerset have yet to win the county championship and once again they dared to dream that this was going to be the year that the holy grail would at last find its way to Taunton.

Sadly, once again it wasn’t to be and Somerset had to content themselves with runners up place in Division One, a place they have occupied on seven occasions this century.

Yes it’s true Somerset are the longest surviving Division One team having been in the top flight since winning promotion in 2007 and they will be there again in 2027, and yes they have won the T20 cup on 3 occasions and appeared in more finals day than any other.

Somerset are there at the top table in cricketing circles and once again supporters have been treated to some great days of cricket- but just for once might they be allowed to win the championship?

There is always next next year- and the one after that - BUT just for once can Somerset fly that elusive championship pennant from the Andy Caddick Pavilion flagpole.
