SOMERSET CCC Women’s team were in contention for a place in the Metro Bank One Day Cup Final right up until the last ball of their season which ended when Surrey’s last pair hit the winning runs with just three balls of the final over remaining.

It was an agonising loss for Somerset and the worse way to lose a game of cricket.

However, the team may not have won anything but in only their second season playing Tier One cricket they have been competitive in all formats and given their supporters much to enjoy during the hot summer and plenty to look forward to in 2027.

Reflecting on the 2026 season former Australian international Erin Osborne, who took over as head coach back at the end of 2025, said: “ I was really happy and to be in the mix to play in the finals right up until the last game in the 50 over comp was something that we’re really proud of.

What part has Erin played in the success of this season? “A lot of what we have achieved is down to the playing group; they are such a good group and they have embraced the changes. Our strength is the connection that we have with each other and the willingness to want to get better and win trophies for Somerset - they are all so determined and dedicated to playing and wanting the best for the county, so a lot of the credit is due to the playing group.

“It is a really young group and you sometimes forget just how young they are, but they are such a skilful group and it is just about unlocking some confidence in them.”

What aspects of the season does Erin feel Somerset enjoyed greatest success in? “There were so many moments that your’e proud of. I think that the resilience of the group is something that is hard to instil in teams. To think we lost six in a row in 50 over cricket, but then to turn it round and still be in contention for the final right up to the very last ball of the season was really special.

“I look back to the Yorkshire game when we had no right to win but thanks to the belief in the group we did, there have been moments like that from the team throughout the season.”

How has Somerset embraced women’s cricket? “We get to travel around England but I’m still yet to come across a place like our home ground. The support we get from the Somerset fans is huge and it’s like you have an extra team member when we play at home.”

Finally how has Erin enjoyed her first season in her post as head coach? “I have absolutely loved my time here; it has been a really good re-set for me to get out of the Australian system. It has been a nice change although it was a bit scary at the time, but it’s one that I have really enjoyed. I’m really glad I took the job and really grateful that Somerset have wrapped their arms around me and made me feel part of the furniture from the very first day I arrived.”
