PRE-SEASON preparations at Minehead Barbarians RFC are continuing to gather momentum, with more than 50 players already attending training as the club builds towards the new campaign.

The impressive turnout has created strong competition for places in both the First and Second XV squads, something Director of Rugby Luke Milton believes can only benefit the club.

“We want our two senior men’s teams to be as strong as possible, and competition for places will drive this. It’s already looking like the coaching staff will have some nice headaches to make come the start of the season.”

The Barbarians have also confirmed their player leadership teams ahead of the new season. First XV captain Bruce Bullard has selected Jacob Gower as his vice-captain, while Second XV captain Harry Reeder, alongside Matt Holan, has appointed Will Lock as vice-captain.

Milton is pleased with the leadership group and believes they will play an important role in bringing the squads together.

“We are really happy with our player leadership team. I’m sure they will be great leaders on and off the pitch and represent the playing squad well.”

There has been further encouragement from the blend of youth and experience within the playing group. A number of last season’s squad have returned, while the club has also welcomed players back into training, including Rob Webber, who is returning to playing.

Milton added: “We have a good mix of younger and older players, which gives the squads a nice balance. Many of the squad are in their peak playing years, so we are hopeful of some big individual and team performances.”

The Barbarians will get their first taste of match action when they welcome Ilfracombe Sharks for a pre-season fixture on Saturday, 19 September.

The league campaign will then get underway on 26 September, with Minehead hoping their strong pre-season preparations can translate into a successful season.
