MINEHEAD & West Somerset Hockey Club celebrated an incredibly successful first season as a fully-merged hockey club last week at their end of season Dinner and Awards ceremony which was held at Minehead & West Somerset Golf Club.

The Men’s First and Second Elevens won their respective Leagues, a double triumph, and the first time the 1’s had topped a league in over twenty years; the Ladies team finished a creditable sixth in what had proved to be the toughest league they had played in for many years, and the Men’s Third eleven ended in third, appropriately, in their League.

Speeches from all four team captains summarised the highs and lows of the season. Chairman Will Lock delivered a great speech thanking the players, supporters and sponsors for their continued loyalty, all of which are hugely appreciated.

Club President Mark Collins handed out the end of season awards ably assisted by Vice-Chair Jan Weetch.

The runaway winner of the Henry Bissell Trophy for highest goalscorer went to Lawrence Taylor with with a splendid 30, the Clubman of the year award went to a deserved Joe Bolton, and Under-18 of the Year award was presented to Sam Cobb.

There is now a short break until the club’s AGM on the 12th May at the Britannia Inn, Alcombe, when all members are invited ll to attend; and new players of all ages are also most welcome.

Hockey restarts with the Charity 7-a-side competition which commences on 21st July for six weeks, which is timed to end just as pre-season training starts up again.
