WIVELISCOMBE play their last rugby match of a very successful season away to Redruth Seconds on Saturday, April 25, having already been crowned champions of Counties One Western West.

The West Somerset side made sure of winning the title when they beat Barnstaple Seconds 36-7 at The Rec last weekend, maintaining their lead over second-placed Paignton.

Paignton also won last Saturday, beating Torquay Athletic, conquerers of Wiveliscombe the previous weekend, by 33-28.

It meant Wiveliscombe maintained their seven-point lead over Paignton and so made certain of finishing top regardless of the results of this weekend’s round of games.

Redruth have won 11 of their 21 matches this season, and have the same number of points as fourth-placed Truro, who have a better points difference.

Wiveliscombe, beaten only three times this season, will be chasing the season’s double over Redruth, having beaten their rivals 30-26 at home on the opening day of the season.

In an exciting game, Redruth got within one point of Wiveliscombe in the second half before Dan Quick clinched victory with a late penalty. Both teams secured the four-try bonus point in a thrilling game.

Fixtures for Saturday, April 25: Penryn v St Ives, Redruth v Wiveliscombe, Saltash v Newton Abbot, Barnstaple v Paignton, Torquay Athletic v Plymstock Oaks, Truro v Kingsbridge.

Wiveliscombe 2nd XV also play their last match of the season when they play away to Taunton side Wyvern in Counties Three Somerset South.

Wyvern are lying fifth but cannot finish any higher despite still having two more games to play, while Wiveliscombe are currently ninth, but could move up a place if they beat Wyvern.

Fixtures: Crewkerne v Bridgwater & Albion, Martock v Hornets, Wells v Weston super Mare, Wyvern v Wiveliscombe.

There are still games to be played on Saturday, May 9, with Hornets entertaining Weston and Wyvern home to 100 per cent Weston.
