CONDITIONS were probably the best they have ever been at Enmore Park Golf Club when they hosted the annual Jerry Lloyds Trophy match against the County Cricketers Golf Society.

There was a slight variation in the format, with all of the six matches having to be played to the 18th, with points won and lost for every hole.

In the event, the change didn’t do anything to weaken the Cricketers’ firm grasp on the trophy and their strong team (at both cricket and golf), brought home the points, much to the delight of their captain Mike Burns.

Former Somerset and Nottinghamshire cricketer Pete Trego said afterwards: “It was another fantastic day of golf. We have been playing the fixture between the ex cricketers and umpires and the Enmore members for years and it’s always something we look forward to.

“The course was in fantastic condition and I think it has been quite tough this year with the weather the way it has been and that really hot spell, but the course played beautifully.”

The former Somerset favourite who is now part of the Somerset Live Stream commentary team went on: “Myself and Ian Blackwell took on the club captain and his team mate and we had a cracking game - the captain played exceptionally well but not quite good enough to beat the two of us. At the end of what was another great day the cricketers and the umpires took the game by a couple of points.

Trego added: “For golf fans who like the Ryder Cup, it has nothing on the Enmore versus The Cricketers day that we have every year. It is something special and everyone enjoys it.”
