MINEHEAD & West Somerset Golf Club have hosted the Senior Mens’ Individual Open, with many visiting golfers making a welcome return.

A large entry took part, challenged initially by a very stiff north east wind. The course was in very good condition, so scoring in this Stableford format was expected to be around par.

John Burrow (Minehead GC) benefitted from a later tee time when the wind had abated and was therefore able to take full advantage of the conditions, winning with nett 42.

Paul Thompson (Minehead GC) came second with nett 37, while Neil Megarry (Minehead GC) took third place with nett 36. Simon Fisher (Teignmouth GC) finished in 6th position as the best visiting player with nett 35. Many congratulations to all the winners.

Minehead Seniors started the week with a Bowmaker and with the course in excellent condition and the weather set fair, scores were expected to be good. That certainly was the case with the winning team of Mark Watson, Edward Frewin and Mike O’Keefe who won with a total of 76 points.

In second place with 71 points were Mark Ruttley, Bob Arthington and Peter Chapple while David Atcherley-Symes, Tim Evans and Nigel Trevelyan came third with 67 points.

The Metcalfe Cup took place on Friday. The Greensomes format and fine weather once again produced a large entry. The winning pair of Graham Troman and Brendan Cleere dovetailed perfectly for an excellent nett 65 particularly as it was the first time they had played together. In second place with nett 66 were Steve Gay and Neville Parsons while Martin Hole and Roger Read were third with nett 67.

To complete a busy week, Round 2 of the Marshall Cup was played, attracting another large entry. Karl Granger won with nett 68, ahead of Dave Ball with 70 and Roger Green who recorded a nett 72.
