TWO first half goals from centre forward Robert Vickers set the Blues up for a relatively comfortable 3-1 home victory over Cleeve West Town in Division One West of the Somerset County League on Saturday.

The first came in only the second minute from the first home attack of the afternoon, with the teenager out-pacing the Cleeve defence and chipping confidently over advancing keeper Tom Hewitt.

With half an hour gone, a virtual copy of the opening goal saw Vickers again too quick for the defence, and another chip over the advancing Hewitt doubled the home advantage.

Just before half-time Vickers was inches away from a hat-trick of similar goals but this time, having again beaten Hewitt, his chip over the keeper went just wide.

The second half saw Cleeve battling hard, but the difference between the teams remained the incisiveness of the home attacks.

Although the visitors enjoyed plenty of possession inside the Minehead half, they rarely threatened the home goal, and when they did, keeper Sam Tarr was in good form, keeping out efforts from Calum Thompson and Nick Baker.

Minehead made it 3-0 five minutes from time when Luke Howells and Vickers combined well and the former slotted home a fine shot just inside the post, giving Hewitt little chance.

Cleeve captain Clayton Matthews claimed a deserved consolation goal a few minutes from time, but the points remained with home side.

Minehead: Sam Tarr, Matty Ronan, Andy Gubb, Mike Mullen, Matt Cracknell, Mike Graddon, Harry Scatchard, Luke Howells, Robert Vickers, Andrew Land, Luke Bloys, subs Callum Barnfield (used), Chris Newbold.

l Tomorrow (Saturday) sees Minehead facing a tough cup match at Upland Castle in the fourth round of the Somerset Senior Cup.

Although the Blues have already completed a league double over the Weston-based side, their opponents are above them in the league, and at the weekend became the first side to take points off runaway leaders Portishead Town Reserves.
