THERE may not have been any one horse open sleighs as Porlock Ladies travelled away to Street, but there were certainly plenty of jingle bells ringing on the return journey as they celebrated our first win in Division Two of the Somerset Women’s Football League.
Their hard fought victory was even sweeter than a Christmas yule log as they came away 3-2 winners in a close, competitive match in windy conditions.
The first half kicked off with the wind behind Porlock, and it took a little while for them to adjust. However, Porlock were the first to find the net. Aimee took a corner which landed right in the danger area, and although Sarah's effort was blocked, Chloe bundled the ball over the line.
Shortly afterwards Street equalised when goalie Hannah tried to clear a back pass. She belted the ball against an onrushing Street player who was completely winded, but unfortunately the rebound went behind Hannah and into an empty net.
Undeterred, Porlock kept pushing forward which resulted in another corner. Julie's ball into the box was cleared seemingly away from danger, however Helen was there to play a first-time ball back to Julie who struck a perfectly placed ball into the far top corner of the net. What a cracker!
Frustratingly, Street scored straight from kick-off, this time the result of another defensive slip. Porlock could have grabbed another couple of goals but Street's defenders battled brilliantly to clear the ball.
In the second half Porlock had to dig deep as Street had the benefit of the wind and were pressing hard. However Porlock’s defence was solid, with Hannah also keeping several shots at bay.
Porlock’s attacking play paid off when Chloe grabbed herself a second goal, due reward for her efforts to chase the ball down. Street's choice for Porlock’s player of the match was Aimee
