PORLOCK are through to the quarter finals of the Somerset Junior Cup after a penalty shootout against Frys Club at home following a 1-1 draw.
In the absence of any goalkeeper being available Jari High, who normally plays on the wing, stepped up to don the gloves and did a great job.
Porlock came out of the blocks sharply catching their counterparts cold, but couldn’t find the back of the net.
As the time passed Fry Club began to get into their stride with some balls in behind the Porlock back line which stand in ‘keeper High dealt with.
The visitors were first to take the lead when a quickly taken goal kick caught Porlock unawares and despite initially saving well High could only turn the ball into the path of the rushing Number 11 who put the visitors 1-0 up, which is what the score was the the break.
Manager Griffiths knew it was only a matter of time before the Porlock attack would make use of the chances they had been creating, and so the team went back out unchanged.
The home side came out determined to get themselves on level terms and it was not long into the second half that they got the break they deserved when Mike Mullen was fouled in the box and a penalty was given, which Ollie Morris stepped up and calmly slotted home.
Porlock kept up the pressure and with multiple goal mouth scrambles and a number of shots being blocked on the line the visitors were defending like their lives depended on it, but whatever the Robins did Frys seemed to have a player in the way.
However late on in the second half the visitors had a free kick which despite finding the back of the net was disallowed for offside. Shortly after the referee brought the game to a finish, taking the tie into the nervy penalties.
The hosts won the toss and skipper Adam Langdon chose to have Porlock taking the first penalty. Jari High stepped up and put it past his counterpart, making it 1-0. High then returned between the posts and saved Fry’s first penalty. Next up for Porlock was Ollie Morris, who made it 2-0 on penalties.
The stand in keeper saved the next penalty from Frys but when Cody Truscott saw his 12 yard kick finger tipped onto the cross bar, and the visitors goalscorer number 11 made no mistake the score was 2-1.
With Skipper Adam Langdon up next, he calmly walked up, placed the ball down and with no nonsense blasted the ball into the right hand side of the goal to put Porlock 3-1 to the good in the shoot out.
Next for the visitors was Number 6 who needing to score to keep Frys in the shoot out appeared to fall for the exact same trap as his early two colleagues and decided to play the ball straight to stand in keeper High who made his third save of the penalty shoot out and book Porlock’s place in the quarter finals.
