WATCHET Town travelled away to play against Staplegrove in the first round of the Taunton Youth League’s Under 11 Knock Out Cup - and came away with a splendid 4-0 victory.
The first twenty minutes was a turgid affair, with both sides struggling to create chances. However, in the 21st minute, a Staplegrove point blank volley from close range looked destined for the top right hand corner only for the outstretched arm of goalkeeper, George Buckley-Smith, to deny them with a truly stunning save.
This moment appeared to galvanise Watchet and set the tone for the rest of the match. From the resulting corner, the visitors cleared the ball and it found its way to Robbie Constable who drove through the midfield and found James Burrows who finished with aplomb into the bottom right hand corner.
Both sides threw caution to the wind for the remainder of the half but, despite a number of chances for both sides, Watchet managed to hold onto their lead and see it through to half time.
The second half saw Watchet serve up a treat for their supporters. Jack Barker won the ball in the centre of the pitch and fed Evan Pople who took the the ball around the defender before finishing into the bottom corner.
Soon it was three. Burrows, after good work down the left channel, was tripped in the box and Constable converted the penalty.
Watchet continued to attack, and were rewarded for their perseverance though when, in the final few minutes, Evan Pople won the ball in midfield and hit a stinging drive that proved too powerful for the Staplegrove goalkeeper's glove and hit the roof of the net.
After the referee blew the final whistle, Watchet will reflect upon their thoroughly deserved success before turning their attention to their match this coming Saturday away to Huish Tigers.
