MINEHEAD eased their relegation worries with a 2-1 away win over second from bottom Bishop Sutton in the first division of the Uhlsport Somerset County Football League.

The seasiders were 1-0 down at the interval but hit back with a fine second-half performance.

“I had a chat with them at half time - and we were much better in the second half,” said Minehead boss Lee Todd.

“Bishop Sutton were a totally different side to when we played them last time. If they can keep the same team they could well avoid relegation at the end of the season.

“It was a must-win game for us. We couldn’t afford to lose because two or three teams below us could go above us if they win their games in hand.

Minehead made a shocking start, conceding a goal in the very first minute and missed a couple of good scoring chances to score in the first half.

But after Todd’s ‘team talk’ they were back on level terms minutes into the second half when Toby Waghorn found the back of the net.

And 20 minutes into the second half they scored again when Tom Barnes threaded a ball through to Ollie Prescott who came off the bench to score with a cool finish.

Minehead: Turner (capt), Burge, JJ Knight, Harvey-Lovell, Green, Jackson, Ronan, Voss, Barnes, Burns, Waghorn. Substitutes: Morris, Haran, Prescott (all used), Harvey-Lamar (not used).

Minehead’s win enabled them to stay in mid-table but they still have some work to do to avoid being caught by two or three teams below them who have games in hand.

Elsewhere, Portishead Town Reserves maintained their seven-point lead at the top of the table with a 1-0 home success over lowly Glastonbury while Peasedown Miners Welfare stay second. They are one point ahead of Combe St Nicholas who have four matches in hand.
