MINEHEAD boss Lee Todd praised his players as the Seasiders moved seven points clear of the bottom three in the Somerset County League Division One on Saturday with a 2-0 victory over visiting Glastonbury.

The two sides knew that with just four games remaining afterwards, it was a huge game for both, but the hosts won it thanks to Toby Waghorn’s double.

His first goal – midway through the first half – came when he latched on to a long kick forward from goalkeeper Greg Turner, before he lifted the ball over the keeper before firing in from virtually on the line.

That allowed the hosts to control the game somewhat and Will Singleton-Voss forced a fine save out of the Glastonbury custodian early in the second half.

But just past the hour Minehead were further in front, albeit in fortuitous circumstances. During a scramble in the visitors’ box, Waghorn made a tackle which ricocheted into the net.

From there on, the Seasiders – who saw JJ Knight and Fin Haran share the man-of-the-match award – saw the game out to give themselves a seven-point cushion over Glastonbury with both sides having just 12 to play for.

A delighted Todd said: “I was very pleased as like I said beforehand, it was a must-win game really.

“We gave the boys some new instructions beforehand and took it on board which was incredibly pleasing.”

It means a win at home to Sporting Weston on Saturday could all but secure their status for another year, but the boss expects a tough challenge.

He said: “It’d be fantastic if we could get another three points, but we know it’ll be a tough game against a good side in my opinion.

“In the away game we were really good in the second half, but were 3-1 down at the break which meant it was never going to be easy.”
