MINEHEAD, the newly crowned champions of Division Three South in the Somerset Women’s League, went on the road one last time as they headed to Pen Mill, where they gained a 3-1 victory to maintain their 100 per cent record. The young Blues settled well and this game felt like a coming-of-age match as they completed a league season in slightly adverse circumstances; they evidently had no issue battling on and showing what a top team they are! With the football flowing nicely on 20 minutes, a trademark Minehead goal came after a finely weighted ball found the league’s top goalscorer, Mabel, through 1-on-1 to bag her 29th of the season and secure a golden boot.

Minehead stayed on top and were creating chance after chance, with the Pen Mill keeper proving difficult to beat from range as her goal was peppered relentlessly. Then, what proceeded will certainly be in goal of the season talks.

What started at the back with Lilly, who was filling in at CB superbly, finding Kayleigh, who then found Erin, who shifted onto Emeral and continued her run, Emeral played the ball towards Evie, who put a sumptuous touch on the ball that found Erin just six yards out as the skipper rounded the keeper and slotted into the empty net. Pure perfection! This goal capped off a brilliant team performance going into half-time at 2-0.

As the second half started with Minehead a player light, it was digging in time as the hosts started brightly chasing the point they needed to finish in third place. Adopting a new approach with a front two and long looping balls, Minehead were caught out as a shot was first saved by Maddison, with the rebound being tapped home from close range.

While the hosts tails were up the strong mindset of Minehead that has only grown stronger in senior football was prevailing. Re-establishing a foothold in the game Minehead got themselves back on top and were once again creating chances; the platform given to them by Darcy, Courtney and Lilly at the back. A makeshift backline that was instrumental in built-up throughout proceedings. As the game approached the 70th minute chances for Emeral, Mabel, Jaz and Kayleigh were adding to Pen Mill’s optimism. This though was finally thwarted by Erin who was dominating proceedings. In almost a carbon copy of her first Blues strung together another great move than finally, saw them put the game to bed with the team’s 126th goal of the season.

The game then petered out in the warm Sunday sunshine as Minehead awaited confirmation that they had completed a league season on debut as unbeaten champions with a 100% win record.
