AN extraordinary finish at Headingley saw Somerset Women claim a dramatic five-run win over Yorkshire in a low-scoring Metro Bank One Day Cup thriller.

Earlier Hannah Rainey took three for 16 off five overs with Jess Woolston and Sarah Glenn also claiming three wickets as the visitors were bowled out for just 130.

However, with four wickets falling with the Yorkshire score stuck on 121 and then the tenth on 125 the visitors secured a sensational victory with Chloe Skelton finishing with four for 28 and Ellie Anderson three for 31 after a remarkable climax.

Yorkshire got off to the best possible start when Bex Odgers left Rainey’s first delivery of the match only to see it cannon into middle stump. The Scottish seamer then bowled Emma Corney for six before Niamh Holland cut her first ball straight to Glenn at cover to leave the visitors on nine for three after 18 balls.

Woolston joined the party in the fourth over as she accounted for Sophie Luff, who edged behind for two, and when Woolston claimed her second wicket, trapping Katie Jones in front for seven, Somerset were 21 for five.

Jazz Westly and Jess Hazell then began to rebuild. The sixth wicket pair put on 66 runs off 93 balls to give the innings some semblance of respectability until Glenn dismissed both in the same over as Westley skied one to mid off for 28 and Hazell was bowled for 33.

Alex Griffiths was run out soon afterwards to leave Somerset 94 for eight and they were indebted to the ninth wicket pair of Skelton and Anderson who managed to eke out 31 runs before both Woolston and Glenn picked up their third victims to finish with three for 25 and three for 24 respectively.

Yorkshire’s reply suffered a quick setback with Lauren Winfield-Hill departing second ball of the innings after top-edging Anderson. Alice Clarke was next to go for six caught behind off Anderson and when Jess Jonassen chipped one to midwicket in the same over suddenly the modest target looked a long way off at 22 for three.

Level heads were needed and Erin Thomas and Sterre Kalis provided them as they compiled a 52-run partnership before Thomas was caught at mid on by Luff off Lola Harris for 29.

Ami Campbell came to the crease in determined mood, smashing the game’s only six, as she and Kalis attempted to get the hosts over the line. Kalis was bowled sweeping by Skelton for 23 but Campbell was not to be denied, hitting five boundaries in her knock of 35 off 17 balls, before she was run out with just ten runs to win.

Then came the late drama with Langston bowled by Skelton first ball and Woolston fourth ball before Glen and Rainey also departed as Yorkshire lost their last five wickets for four runs.

At the end of a remarkable match, Sophie Luff said: “It was an unbelievably great game of cricket. You always believe you can take one wicket and then you never know what can happen. Both sides probably didn’t have their greatest day with the bat and we were able to capitalise on that with our bowling. “Ami Campbell came in and put impetus into their innings but once we got her we felt we could get ourselves back into the game.
