A NEW community orchard project has been launched in Minehead through a partnership between the National Trust, Minehead Town Council, and local residents.

A pilot scheme will transform the Ellicombe green space with the planting of 12 fruit trees, including the locally significant Dunster plum.

The project will boost biodiversity and create a lasting community asset.

A public drop-in ‘conversation’ event will be held on August 13, and community planting and free family activities will take place on September 26.

The aim is to bring residents, local organisations, and partners together to enhance green spaces across Minehead.

Led by the National Trust and town council and funded through the trust’s Festival of Blossom programme, supported by players of People's Postcode Lottery, the initiative aims to create nature-rich spaces which benefit both people and wildlife.

Ellicombe will be the focus of the pilot project, where residents will help plant fruit trees.

Designed with community involvement at its heart, the project should improve biodiversity, strengthen connections between people and place, and create a lasting legacy for future generations.

Trust volunteering co-ordinator Amy Wigglesworth said: “This is an exciting opportunity to work in partnership with the local community to create a thriving, nature-rich space at Ellicombe that supports biodiversity while providing an attractive and welcoming environment for people to enjoy.

“The project highlights what can be achieved when communities come together to invest in nature, helping to make our towns and villages greener, more resilient, and better places to live, work, and visit.”

The August drop-in event will be held on the green space just off Mallard Road, Minehead.

Residents can also take part in the September community planting celebration, which will feature free family-friendly activities and nature-based learning and opportunities.
