A PROLIFIC Exmoor shoplifter has been given a suspended prison sentence and ordered to attend a drug rehabilitation course after admitting stealing from stores in Wellington.

Peter O’Keefe, aged 56, of Timberscombe, appeared for sentencing before Taunton magistrates on Friday (May 29) for five thefts over six months between last September and March, 2026.

Four charges related to Asda, in Wellington, where he stole £837.76 of items, including five vodka bottles.

The fifth was £501.87 of items from Blackdown Garden Centre.

Magistrates said O’Keefe showed flagrant disregard for people and their property and imposed a 10-week jail sentence, suspended for 18 months.

O’Keefe was told to repay the full value of the stolen goods and to undergo drug rehabilitation and carry out 30 days’ unpaid community work.
