THE community is set for a heart-warming night at the movies as Watchet Community Cinema screens ‘Save the Cinema’.

The screening will be held on Friday, January 23.

This film is said to perfectly celebrate the power of community, creativity and a shared love of the big screen.

Based on a true story, ‘Save the Cinema’ transports audiences back to 1993 and into a small Welsh town fighting to preserve its beloved Art Deco cinema.

More than just a building, the cinema is a cultural hub and the home of a local youth theatre.

When plans emerge for “shifty developers” to bulldoze it and replace it with a shopping mall, the town’s residents refuse to let their history be erased without a fight.

At the centre of the story is Liz Evans, a spirited local hairdresser played with warmth and grit by Samantha Morton. Rallying fellow townspeople, including the town mayor, Liz leads an extraordinary grassroots campaign that reaches far beyond their quiet corner of Wales.

Their boldest move? Enlisting the help of none other than Steven Spielberg to host a special premiere at the threatened cinema.

With an ensemble cast that includes Jonathan Pryce, Tom Felton, Adeel Akhtar and Susan Wokoma, the film is packed with character and charm.

Populated by lovable eccentrics, it has the gentle humour and emotional pull of a classic Ealing comedy, while delivering a timely reminder of what can be achieved when people unite behind something they truly care about.

The screening takes place at Watchet Community Cinema, Knights Templar School, Watchet (TA23 0EX). Doors open at 6.30 pm, with the film starting at 7 pm.

Tickets cost just £4 and are available on the door.
