THEY say life begins at 40 – and it certainly has for Minehead’s over 40s walking football club.

The club was formed some six months ago and is part of the fastest growing sport in the country, with over 420 teams nationally.

And now they’re looking for more players to join them.

Phil O’Gorman, who runs the club, said: “Since we started I have seen a big improvement in the players’ fitness and skill level. We have a number who have lost over half a stone in weight.”

There is no running on or off the ball so passing to feet has to be accurate and players need to keep moving all the time, and it is not unusual for players to cover more than five miles in a hour’s play.

Forthcoming events include a game against a visiting team from Coventry and a tournament at Street.

“We are always looking for new players, and you don’t have to be super fit or have played football before,” said Phil.

If you are interested in trying the sport, the team play on Tuesday evenings at 7.15pm at the West Somerset College.
