WATCHET Town Vikings are through to the second round of the Somerset Under 12 Girls KO Cup after beating Shepton Mallet Sports Lynx 3-1 away in their first-ever match in the competition.

Vikings started strongly and went ahead with a trademark goal from Piper who skipped past two challenges out on the right before shooting home from the edge of the penalty area.

Their second goal came ten minutes later from a cracking through ball from Hallie. Lily F gathered the pass and shot into the bottom corner.

However, Shepton finished the first half stronger and Nikkita, who had not had much to do in goal, made a cracking save.

The second half saw a change in goal. Ella, who passed a late fitness test, came on for Nikkita who went outfield to her normal position in defence.

Aleigha came on for Fern and Lois came on for Annabelle. Both U11 girls played very well and should be proud of themselves. However, Vikings found a fight on their hands when Shepton scored to make it 2-1.

Vikings won a free kick late on in the game and up stepped Piper to score her second of the match - and went close to scoring a third.
