WIVELISCOMBE will be looking to take another step towards the title when they play away to Torquay Athletic in Counties One Western West on Saturday (April 11).

The West Somerset side have won 17 of their 19 matches this season and go into the game at Torquay with a nine-point lead over second-placed Paignton.

The gap would have been much bigger had Wiveliscombe not lost their away match against Paignton towards the end of last month. The Devon side are now the only team who can deny Wiveliscombe of the championship.

Paignton are also in action on Saturday. They play away to Plymstock Oaks who recently lost 69-14 at Wiveliscombe. Barnstaple Seconds, in third place, play at home to Kingsbridge but trail Paignton by 13 points.

The only match played last weekend (April 4) resulted in a 34-5 home win for Redruth 2nd XV who beat fifth-placed Truro.

It was a result which enabled Redruth to move up to fourth in the table, six points behind Barnstaple 2nd XV.

Fixtures: Penryn v Newton Abbot, Redruth v St Ives (SW), Barnstaple v Kingsbridge, Plymstock Oaks v Paignton, Torquay Athletic v Wiveliscombe, Truro v Saltash.

Meanwhile, Wiveliscombe 2nd XV play at home to their Bridgwater & Albion counterparts in Counties Three Somerset on Saturday.

Wiveliscombe, who were promoted at the end of last season, are lying eighth in the table, having found it much tougher going this winter.

The only match played in the division last weekend resulted in Weston super Mare beating Crewkerne 56-0 which enabled them to move up to within five points of leaders Wells who are still 100 per cent after 15 matches.

Fixtures: Chard v Weston super Mare, Martock v Wyvern, Wells v Crewkerne, Tor v Hornets, Wiveliscombe v Bridgwater & Albion.

Wellington 2nd XV are no longer playing in this division.
