AS THE season kicks off at Minehead Barbarians, there is a sense of excitement building at the club, led by the appointment of New Zealand coach, Isaiah Graham-Hooper, who hails from Taranaki.

He brings with him a wealth of experience in coaching as well as two young kiwi lads who will fit straight into the playing squad. Isaiah will be ably assisted by coaches Jack Claydon and Ross Cox who have done a great job in pre-season as well as first team manager Kyle Lewis and Director of Rugby Richard Parsons.

The 1st XV had a tough start with a heavy defeat at Burnham who look intent on challenging for a return straight back to the division above.

The following week was another tough fixture at home to Avon. Minehead dug in and fought hard coming away deserved winners.

Perhaps the most optimistic sign of the new season is seeing the 2nd XV win both matches, firstly against Yeovil at home, and then with an outstanding performance at Burnham. The hard work of coach Graham-Hooper and his team is starting to show, with both teams training better together.

One disappointment has been that Bridport RFC, who Minehead were due to host in the national cup, could not fulfil the fixture.

This weekend the Barbarians’ 1st XV travel to Castle Cary in the league, a team who have recently gained promotion. The 2nd XV entertain Hornets from Weston Super Mare, and skipper Matt Holman will be hoping to continue their strong start.

The club’s fledging ladies side continues to grow, led by Martin Cherry and Hannah Martin.

The mini and junior section continues to thrive and with this being the 80th anniversary of the forming of Minehead Barbarians, all those former players would be happy seeing so many mini and junior rugby players meeting up to train and play the game.
