WATCHET Town put up a spirited showing before losing 4-0 at home to title-contenders Chilcompton Sports in the Premier Division of the Uhlsport Somerset County Football League in their latest match.

At two goals down the Red & Blacks had chances and went close to reducing the arrears either side of the interval.

However, the home side made the worst possible start by gifting their lofty opponents the lead inside the first minute. Possession was lost on halfway and with keeper Jack Harding out of his goal Cook profited by lobbing into an empty net.

Watchet rallied after this setback and for the rest of the half worked hard to make life difficult for the visitors A second goal eventually followed when a header from point blank range crossed the line after smacking the bar.

The Chilli keeper was then called into action just before the break, sprawling to keep out Jay Darrell’s deflected effort, tipping Eben Harding’s header over and then denying Charley Clausen.

Soon after the hour substitute Braden Taylor combined with Charley Clausen to set up a chance for Billy Jones which forced another fine stop and Watchet felt they should have had a penalty when Clausen was grounded from a corner.

It was game over when Parfitt drilled home a third Chilcompton goal midway through the half and keeper Harding was kept busy either side of Gay adding a fourth to ensure the score remained at a relatively respectable level.

Beaten but not disgraced by a superior footballing team, Watchet could take some heart from their overall performance.
