MINEHEAD Barbarians U14 Girls started their season with a convincing victory in their debut match against a combined Bridgwater and Burnham side.
The team, who only began training together at the start of the season under head coach Ben White, showed off their skills with an impressive performance full of energy, determination and teamwork.
The game consisted of some amazing runs from Eliza White, Poppy Coles and Darcey Rees. Dolly Staley, Daisy Wickenden while Chloe Wickens linked up well, with Julliana Jasiekzuk and Nancy Whittaker creating memorable chances with quick off loads.
Ivy Barrass protected the ball well, at one point diving onto the loose ball to ensure the Barbarians could continue their attack and cross the line for a try.
The team dominated the game, however, in the periods of defensive play Abbey Horne and Izzy Colwill carried out stand out tackles.
ess Swann put in a powerful performance at loose-head prop and repeatedly drove the ball forwards, to maintain pressure on the visitors. Minehead dominated for large periods, but the second half brought a new challenge as they were playing uphill. The Barbarians adapted their game plan and made excellent use of the width of the pitch.
The wingers were brought into play, with Orla Scandrett producing several impressive runs , Daisy Gregory also reacted quickly to pick up a loose ball and went on to score again.
Tries were scored by Eliza White, Jess Swann, Abbey Horne, Ivy Barrass, Emma Wing, Izzy Colwill, Darcey Rees and Poppy Coles with Emma Wing doing her team proud by converting nearly all of her attempts.
The result was important but the girls' attitude and team spirit were just as impressive. They encouraged one another, celebrated each other's successes and showed a real enjoyment of playing together. Barbarian of the match went to Izzy Colwill and Jess Swann won Gladiator of the match.
