THE final match of the season played by Minehead & West Somerset Golf Club Seniors was the MET Shield hosted this year by Enmore Park.

This annual 4BBB event played between Enmore Park,, Tiverton and Minehead is eagerly anticipated by the three clubs and brings closure to the friendly match season for another year.

Last year’s holders Minehead, unfortunately, could not repeat their success, finishing third with an aggregate 274 points. Many congratulations to the home club, Enmore Park who deservedly won the shield with 308 points, beating Tiverton into second place with 296 points.

Overall, in the Seniors’ friendly matches played this year, Minehead won 8, lost 9 and drew 1.

Minehead also won the Jasper Cup against Oake Manor, winning 7-5 on aggregate and also retained as holders, the Rod Rufus Trophy against Worlebury drawing 6-6.

It has been an excellent season all round and grateful thanks go to the three captains/organisers: Steve Woodbury, Chris Durman and Chris Garwood for all their efforts and hard work in promoting so successfully what these matches are all about.

On the domestic front, Minehead Seniors midweek white tee 4BBB competition provided a close result with the top ten pairings finishing within four points of each other. In the winner’s enclosure with 42 points were Chris Durman and Tom Cotter, followed by Dave Walmsley and Peter Chapple with 41 points. Roger Read and Martin Hole were third on countback (40 points) ahead of Dave Ball and Tony Connolly.

In contrast, the Pinehurst Greensomes competition played on Friday was anything but close. A scintillating nett 63 from the winners Dave Walmsley and Richard Austwick absolutely dominated the event by a seven-shot margin. Many congratulations to them. Second place on countback with nett 70 was Dave Ball and Nigel Trevelyan ahead of Peter Allerton and Andy Hodgson in third place.
