SATURDAY saw three crews from Wimbleball Rowing Club compete at the Port of Bideford Regatta, the last West of England Amateur Rowing Association regatta of the season.

Tom Enright competed in the men’s junior 16 single sculls and came fourth in his heat, missing out on the final by a bow ball.

And later in the day he joined forces with three boys from Bideford Blues to compete in the men’s junior 16 fours, finishing third in a tough race against well-drilled and practiced crews from Dart Totnes and Exeter.

Charlotte Enright and Becky Ansell competed in three hard races during the day.

First they joined up with Tegan Peel and Alice Middleton from Dartmouth Rowing Club for the women’s Junior 14 fours, and after going ahead from the start, cox Jess Middleton steered and pushed them to the finish line, leaving clear water between them and the next crew.

Becky and Charlotte then rowed back up to the start for the women’s junior 14 double sculls against a strong line-up of crews from Plymouth, Dart Totnes, Castle Dore and Dartmouth.

One of the Castle Dore crews proved their main competition, and both crews were neck and neck until halfway down the course, when the Wimbleball pair upped the pressure and moved away to finish first.

The girls also competed in the women’s Junior 14 single sculls, this time going against the tide which made rowing extremely difficult.

Becky came fourth in her heat so missed out on the final, but Charlotte won her heat then dominated the final to give Wimbleball Rowing Club their 19th event win of the season.

Until winter ‘head’ races begin, the rowers only have the South Coast Championships left, being held this weekend on their home waters of Wimbleball Lake.
