WIMBLEBALL Rowing Club’s youngsters notched up more successes at the Totnes and Bridgetown Royal Regatta on the River Dart at the weekend.

Saturday’s events were over a 500-metre sprint course, and Tom Enright, rowing up a category in the men’s J17 single sculls, rowed a gritty heat to beat Totnes then later in the day powered home for his first singles win in a close-fought final.

Charlotte Enright, also rowing up a category, competed in the women’s J15 single sculls and after “catching a crab” at the start she settled into a good rhythm to come second behind British Junior Club Champion Tallulah Bowyer of Exeter.

Charlotte teamed up with Becky Ansell in the women’s J14 double sculls and they beat Dartmouth and Totnes in their heat then in the final, against an unfamiliar crew from Gloucester, they showed their strength and dominance to win by a length and secure their fourth win in a row this season.

Becky also helped out Paignton’s mixed novice 4 by coxing them through their heat - another first as she had never coxed at a regatta before and only once during training.

On Sunday, with some doubt about whether racing would go ahead because of the bad weather, several crews scratched and left. Although conditions for much of the day were foul, with heavy rain and a gusty wind blowing into competitors’ faces, there was some good rowing from the many crews who stayed.

Charlotte and Becky competed in heats for the women’s J14 single sculls over 1000 metres, with Becky finishing a close second to just miss out on the final, and Charlotte, who faced an extra heat, winning twice to make the final.

There she faced crews from Dart Totnes and Paignton and won comfortably.

Tom Enright represented the club in the J16 single sculls and Tom Cann in the men’s senior C single sculls but both missed out on their final.

Tom Cann also rowed in the men’s senior A single sculls and came third.

The next regatta for Wimbleball is the Torbay Royal Regatta on August 15.
