MINEHEAD Reserves gained a 4-1 away win over Old Inn 98 in the group stages of the Taunton Saturday League’s KO Cup.
Minehead travelled to Bridgwater knowing a win might not be enough and that goal difference was undoubtedly going to come into play.
A disastrous start saw the Blues go behind in the 12th minute but they were soon back in the game with the strong midfield of Josh and Sam Heath, Dan Vickers and Erik Zachrison beginning to boss proceedings.
Scott Kivell and Riley Pope were very active and after the disastrous start the back five of keeper Nat Leader, Myles and Jack Campbell-Farmer, Andy Gubb and Alfie Cotterell were very solid, giving few chances.
However, despite numerous shots either going wide, high or at the fine Old Inn keeper it was Zachrison who drew the Blues level and ease their concerns. Haiden Griffiths came on for Kivell after 30 minutes and it was he that put Minehead ahead on half time with a low volley into the bottom corner.
With Old Inn tiring the play was all one way. Oli Jones came on together with Lyam Scheepers with the changes proving almost seemless. The next goal after 20 minutes of the second half was from top scorer Pope with his 12th of the season and the game was rounded off by veteran Gubb with his first of the season, bundling the ball home at the far post.
This was a good result for the Blues who are now in the hands of others as to whether they qualify for the 1/4 finals or drop into the West Somerset Bowl. Man of the match: Alfie Cotterell.
Team: Nat Leader, Jack Campbell-Farmer, Myles Campbell-Farmer, Andy Gubb, Alfie Cotterell, Dan Vickers, Josh Heath, Sam Heath, Erik Zachrison, Riley Pope, Scott Kivell, Subs:- Haiden Griffiths, Oli Jones, Lyam Scheepers.
