THE Minehead and West Somerset Golf Club Senior’s much-awaited ‘Ed’s Birthday Bash,’ which has now become a popular annual fixture in the diary, was played on Friday.
The medal format proved challenging as once again the elements decided more wind and rain were needed! A full entry participated and some excellent scores were returned.
Rob Poirrier took the honours with a nett 67 and was presented with an original watercolour painting by Edward’s late wife; a renowned artist in her own right.
The picture was presented by Lola, one of Edward’s grandchildren. Second place with a nett 68 was Frazer Lawrence while third position went to Trevor Stephens on countback with a nett 69 ahead of John Burrow and Nigel Trevelyan.
An additional prize was also awarded to the person who scored the most pars in his round. This ended in a tie between Frazer Lawrence and Dave Oatridge, both scoring 11 pars/birdies in their round. Frazer won on countback and was presented with an edition of 20 giclee prints of botanical paintings also by Edward’s late wife. Ivy, Edward’s other granddaughter, presented the prize.
A sum in excess of £300 was raised on the day and which will find its way to The Beacon Centre at Musgrove Hospital. The event proved a great success despite the wet weather which has been lashing at courses all over the Westcountry throughout this year.
Looking back to recent competitions, Minehead Seniors played a Pine-amble competition - again in poor weather. The pairing of Karl Granger and Roger Read defied the lively wind to record a nett 63 to win the competition. Steve Woodbury and Nigel Trevelyan finished second with a nett 65 while Mark Ruttley and Richard Austwick were third with nett 66.
