MINEHEAD and West Somerset Golf Club hosted a mixed competition on Easter Monday with thirteen pairs taking part in an aggregate Stableford competition.

Despite the somewhat brutal conditions experienced on the back nine, Paddy and Ruth Maclennan dodged sufficient bullets for a decisive winning total of 62 points; second place on countback with 58 were Paul and Corrinne Rees ahead of Kay Luckett and Nigel Trevelyan in third.

Minehead Seniors played a friendly match away at Worlebury on Wednesday, managing an excellent 4-2 win.

The Metcalfe Cup was played on Friday. The greensomes format encouraged a full entry and with the benefit of warmer weather, Steve Gay and Malcolm Bruce obviously suited to more tropical conditions, took full advantage, returning the winning score of nett 69. In second position were Rob Poirrier and Roger Read with 71 while third on count back with 72 were Edward Frewin and Dave Oatridge.

On Sunday the Minehead club hosted the 2025 Bickerton Bowl, a scratch strokeplay competition played over 36 holes which is part of the Somerset Golf Union Sumara Salver Order of Merit. Played in benign conditions without the normal steady breeze many players took advantage and posted some excellent scores.

At the end of the 36 holes with rounds of 67 and 69 giving him an 8 under par total 136 the winner of the Bickerton Bowl was Jonathan Grace from Camberwell Park Golf Club near Bath. Second place, six stokes behind, were Josh Martin from Oake Manor Golf Club and Archie Walsh from Minehead and West Somerset Golf Club on 142.

Players were full of praise for the excellent condition of the course and for the way that the event had been organised. Thanks from everybody involved goes to the club’s professional John Bickerton for his ongoing support of the event.
