DEREK Bryant, a Bristol based footballer who had three successful spells with Minehead AFC, passed away peacefully in his sleep earlier this week when he lost his battle against prostate cancer.

Derek will be fondly remembered by any Minehead players and supporters who can recall him being a highly regarded striker during the club’s heady achievements in the late 1970s. His first appearance was in January 1968, and he went on to make nearly 400 appearances, scoring 172 times. He remains the clubs’ fourth highest scorer in history.

In between his three spells with the club, Derek also played for Taunton Town and Forest Green, and the highlight of his football career was a season with Merthyr Tydfil where he formed a lethal partnership with the famous Welsh legend John Charles.

Minehead Football Club’s sincere condolences have been sent to Derek’s wife and family.
