AFTER losing 4-0 at home to Clevedon AFC the previous weekend, Watchet Town travelled to Clevedon United last Saturday where they had suffered a 9-0 cup-tie trouncing earlier in the season.

Despite conceding three goals in an eight-minute first half spell in this match in the Premier Division of the Uhlsport Somerset County League, the visitors stuck to the task and battled hard in a goalless second period.

With teenagers Lewis Clavey and Zacc Binding in their starting lineup ,Watchet began brightly and Clavey sent an early shot into the sidenetting. Things swung in the home side’s favour as a familiar pattern saw Watchet undone three times in quick succession when more assertive defending might have avoided them.

Clevedon’s midfield diamond shape, backed up by a pacey marauding left back, continued to cause Watchet problems but they managed to hold on up to the halftime interval.

In the second half Watchet looked more solid without being able to make the most of having the strong wind at their backs. Billy Jones was cautioned for a challenge on the keeper and a dangerous cross from Josh Aspey passed through the Clevedon goalmouth with the finishing touch lacking.

Watchet defended some threatening inswinging home corners to good effect and apart from a few physical challenges the game rather petered out with no addition to the 3-0 scoreline.

Watchet: Jack Harding, Josh Aspey, Charley Clausen, Eben Harding, Zacc Binding, Lewis Rogers, Karl Boswell, Aiden Buller, Todd Willis, Lewis Clavey, Billy Jones. Subs: Ollie Webber, Harry Johnson and Chase Clausen (used).

This Easter weekend sees Watchet make their longest trip of the season on Saturday to Keynsham to face Fry Club who beat them 4-0 at the Memorial Ground. Easter Monday’s away day takes them almost as far to Stockwood Green for a fixture which has twice been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
