DESPITE giving a much-improved performance, Watchet Town still went down by 5 goals to 2 last Saturday when they entertained third in the table Wells City Reserves in the Premier Division of the Uhlsport Somerset County League at the Memorial Ground.

After holding an early lead for most of the first half, the Red & Blacks were eventually undone by three second half strikes from their lofty opponents. The home side went ahead when Adam Jefferies nodded on a throw in from Billy Jones and Alfie Cox stole in to send a looping header over the keeper & under the bar.

Most spectactors thought Watchet had made it 2-0 when the Wells keeper spilled a high ball under no pressure for Jones to hook it over the goalline, only for the referee to give a foul that virtually no one else could see.

Watchet worked hard all round to preserve their advantage and keeper Jack Harding made some good saves until the 40th minute when Wells equalised. Deep into a generous helping of stoppage time Harding clipped an onrushing forward and Wells went ahead from the resulting penalty.

An extravagant visiting celebration led to an ugly skirmish which saw Josh Aspey and an opponent receive straight red cards.

The visitors had the better of the second half and increased their lead soon after the hour. Jones had a chance to reduce the arrears after cutting from the left only to blaze high and wide before more sloppy home defending made it 4-1.

Eben Harding lashed home a loose ball to give Watchet brief hopes, but Wells went almost straight to the other end to make the final score 5-2.
