WATCHET travelled to Wrington on Saturday for their fourth game in eight days and, after twice falling behind, came home with a point from a 2-2 draw.

With their usual central defensive pairing of Matt Heywood and Jamie Milton unavailable through work commitments, the jaded Red and Blacks were not at their best, but they refused to buckle under.

With Eben Harding and Chris Sully at the heart of their defence, they did their best to repel the home side as they pressed down the slope with a stiff breeze behind them.

But after weathering the early storm, they were undone when a cross from the right fell to the unmarked left winger who hooked his volley out of Adam Bishop’s reach and in off a post.

Watchet’s equaliser came somewhat out of the blue when Aerron Clausen’s close control just outside the home penalty area was followed by a neat pass which gave Zac Ryder the chance to turn and hit a clinical finish into the far corner of the net with his left foot.

With Wrington appealing for a free-kick near the halfway line, Ryder then bore down on goal again with an even better opportunity, only to be thwarted this time by the onrushing keeper.

The home side relied heavily on playing high balls in to their big striker, but on the whole Watchet dealt well with their attacks.

However, soon after the hour they were left chasing the game again when a home forward was allowed to cut in from the touchline and strike a ground shot from just outside the area which bobbled over the diving Bishop’s outstretched arm and sneaked inside an upright.

Wrington went in search of a third goal to kill Watchet off, but the visitors continued to defend stoutly, typified by a lunging block tackle from Callum Knight.

The hosts saw a 25-yarder come back out off the bar, and at the other end Aaron Deeks was the supplier as Ryder had his shot palmed away by the keeper at his near post and Charley Clausen blazed wide of the same upright.

A routine back-pass then almost embarrassed the home keeper as he sliced his attempted clearance and the ball swirled behind him and passed perilously close to his own goal before going out for a corner.

The home side were still shading possession when Watchet drew level for the second time with 12 minutes remaining when a corner from Deeks found substitute George Dawson rising at the far post and he planted his header into the roof of the net.

The youngster then almost turned from hero to villain when a home forward went down under his challenge, but the referee ignored vociferous claims for a penalty - largely from the Wrington dugout – and the spoils were shared with the visitors ending the match with more than one walking wounded.
