The Bryan Wells Junior County Cup semi final
Porlock 1-0 Wembdon
PORLOCK booked their spot in the Bryan Wells Junior County Cup Final for the first time in their history when they beat Wembdon on Saturday afternoon.
This was the fourth time the teams had met this season and with Wembdon having triumphed in the previous three, Porlock were out to gain their revenge.
The game kicked off with both teams looking nervous but they gradually increased the tempo looking to break each other down.
Wembdon had the first chance on goal from a set piece but their slipper’s effort was just over the bar.
Porlock then began causing the Wembdon back line trouble as the pace of Caleb Laney, Joe Fitzsimmons and Braden Taylor created space, but the well drilled defence always managed to cover.
Wembdon claimed a penalty late on in the first half but the referee adjudged that there was no time for the player to move his arm out of the way and the whistle blew to end the first half 0-0.
Porlock came out after the break looking a different side. Playing great football, they pressured the Wembdon back line and midfield causing them to make costly mistakes. However last ditch defending stopped Porlock from capitalising on their efforts.
A goal mouth scramble from a Porlock corner looked to be heading into the net but the ball was cleared off the line and the clearance kick allowed Wembdon to have a quick counter attack, However the attack was stopped and a free kick awarded which allowed the Wembdon centre backs to make their way into the Porlock box.
The ball was whipped in and their skipper got up the highest and headed the ball towards the far corner for a certain goal. However ‘keeper Darren Sherring made a top class save and at full stretch tipped the ball onto the crossbar and the Porlock defence cleared the ball to safety.
This passage of play gave Wembdon the belief they could go on and win but in the end this was to be the catalyst in their demise.
As Wembdon came forward they left acres of space and Porlock midfield maestro Ollie Morris played a through ball straight into the heart of the defence to unleash striker Caleb Laney who went onto slot the ball into the bottom right hand corner and give Porlock the lead with five minutes remaining.
Wembdon threw everything they had at Porlock and with every set piece they loaded the box and even sent the goalkeeper up to try and send it to the dreaded penalty shootout.
However the Porlock back line of Zac Brown, Chris James, Harry Kivell and Declan Paterson had the answer to everything that the visitors could muster up.
When the referee blew the whistle to end the game the Porlock players celebrated their 1-0 victory a result that had won their team a place in the County Cup final.
The final against Swiss Valley Rangers from the Weston super Mare League will be played at Middlezoy FC on Tuesday, April 22.
