MINEHEAD Reserves still ran out 4-0 comfortable winners over Middlezoy Rovers Athletic on Saturday in Division One of the Taunton and District Saturday League despite missing four key players.
The addition of veteran “Curly” Nield leading a back line including Alfie Cotterell, man-of-the-match Oli Jones and Finn Landon helped and they were rarely troubled all afternoon dealing with everything calmly and efficiently.
After six minutes Dan Vickers dispossessing a Middlezoy player in his half before his inch-perfect throughball found Haiden Griffiths who, one-on-one, slid the ball calmly past the advancing keeper for his 14th of the season.
Within three minutes of the restart some good work on the left by Riley Pope resulted in a pass to Oli Reaney who, with a lot still to do, scored with a fine shot on the angle from 12 yards.
The floodgates looked as if they would open with Minehead bossing the game without needing to get into top gear, and with better finishing may have gone into half-time with the game done and dusted. Tomasz Kubaczewski, back between the sticks for the rested Nat Leader, had little to do all afternoon other than to watch a speculative long-range shot rebound off his upright.
The second half continued to be very one-sided with Rob and Dan Vickers, Reaney and Bart Kubaczewski now in midfield, but despite all their work and possession it wasn’t until 10 minutes before the end that the Seasiders sealed the win with their third. Rob Vickers drifted past his marker and after getting to the byeline, slid the ball across the goal for Pope to fire home also for his 14th of the season.
One or two players are due back on Saturday for Minehead’s last away trip of the season to Bridgwater Sports (2.30pm) who will be looking to avenge their 1-0 defeat to the Blues in February.
