MINEHEAD lost 6-1 away to Weston Mendip in the Somerset Girls Under 13 Cup which was played in difficult conditions with strong winds and hail storms.

The match was fast and physical from the start, both sides battling hard in gusty winds. The early exchanges were largely in Minehead’s half, with Weston Mendip’s attackers pressing high.

Mendip’s perseverance paid off when they broke through and found the net, and doubled their lead two minutes later.

Minehead keeper responded brilliantly, intercepting two strong efforts and making several brave saves under pressure but Mendip increased their lead to 4-0

Despite trailing Minehead’s heads didn’t drop and they fought back with determination, Their persistence paid off when Minehead's attack burst through and scored - a well deserved goal that lifted spirits just before half time, making it 4-1 at the break.

At the restart Minehead's forwards continued to threaten on the counter, with driving runs that kept the Mendip defence on their toes. At the other end Minehead’s keeper pulled off two more outstanding saves but had to come off after a collision left her nursing a sore back. A brave stand-in goalie stepped up and immediately impressed, producing a string of confident stops, including a superb save from a powerful strike.

The last quarter of play was end to end as both teams pressed hard. Minehead stayed competitive throughout, with the midfield hustling constantly. Mendip’s strong attack saw more goals making the final score at 6-1.

Despite the scoreline, this was a spirited display from Minehead against a strong Weston Mendip side in truly stormy conditions. The girls showed resilience, teamwork, and plenty of heart, even as the gusts of Storm Amy swirled around the pitch.

The girls now look to return to league action this weekend when they welcome Pen Mill to Allerford.
