MINEHEAD moved up to fifth place in Division One of the Uhlsport Somerset County Football League with a surprise 2-1 home win over leaders Portishead Town Reserves.

Minehead boss Lee Todd said afterwards: “It was a really good all-round performance. They are a good side but we could have won by a bigger margin if we had taken all our chances.

“We came under some pressure but we didn’t crumble. We stayed firm against a very useful side who will be there, or thereabouts, at the end of the season.”

All of the goals came in the first half, with the leagues’ top scorer Toby Waghorn scoring twice for The Blues, as well as having a third ‘goal’ disallowed for another very debatable offside flag.

Minehead captain Stefan Phillips made his first start since September, and with Josh Elston returning for his first appearance of the season, Minehead strung things together well throughout.

Minehead: Greg Turner, JJ Knight, Toby Morris, Louis Burge, Will Singleton-Voss, Sam Jackson, Toby Waghorn, Olly Prescott, Matty Ronan Subs: Declan Green, Guy Burns, Harvey Henderson (all used). Man of the Match: Will Singleton-Voss.

Despite their defeat - only their second of the season - at Minehead, Portishead remain top of the table. They have a three-point lead over second-placed Peasedown Miners Welfare who won 2-1 at home to Imperial and have two matches in hand on their rivals.

Combe St Nicholas are third, six points further behind, and have matches in hand on the two teams above them and remain the only side in the division who have still to lose a game.

At the other end of the table, Bishop Sutton are bottom, having lost ten of their 12 matches - and drawn twice. They are three points adrift of Keynsham Town Reserves who have won only one of their ten games.
