MINEHEAD Colts won a penalty shootout at home to Nether Stowey in the second round of the Taunton Saturday Football League’s Rowbarton Charity Cup after the sides had fought out a 2-2 draw.

The Colts travelled to Bridgwater to play Stowey from the league above knowing that it was going to be a tough ask and it proved to be the case with nothing to choose between the side after 90 minutes of play.

Minehead started slowly with Stowey having the lions share of possession and creating the more opportunities but the Colts defence led by man of the match Lewis Norman held firm and goalkeeper Tomas Kubaczewski made some fine saves when needed.

After 20 minutes a loss of possession in midfield resulted in Stowey taking the lead with a low shot into the corner which resulted in a sustained spell of pressure for Stowey who increased their lead in the 35th minute.

For the remainder of the half the Colts gained in confidence and 16 year old striker Haiden Griffiths brought a good save from the Stowey keeper in a rare attack.

The second half started with a change of formation by the Colts who changed to three at the back and bringing on Caleb Laney upfront to play alongside Griffiths. This helped with space for both strikers and gave the stubborn Stowey side something else to think about.

The Colts continued the second half as they ended the first creating more and more opportunities and restricting their opponents to long range shots which Kubaczewski kept out.

On the 60 minutes a ball was played through to Griffiths and after outpacing the defenders the keeper couldn't keep out his fierce strike.

Growing more and more in confidence the young Colts kept up the pressure on a tiring Stowey with the goalkeeper making some fine saves from both strikers but in the 80th minute Laney pounced on indecisive defending and squared the ball to Griffiths who kept his composure and brought the scores back level nutmegging the keeper.

The final 10 minutes it was all Colts who could have won it with the last kick of the game when Griffiths slid his shot just past the post.

With the match going straight to penalties the confidence was high after Stowey missed their opening kick and after that five well taken penalties meant the Colts came from behind to earn a fantastic win.
