MINEHEAD’S 11 men fought bravely to gain a point against Middlezoy Rovers, the runaway unbeaten champions of Division One West last Saturday.
And when Felix Ndiomo’s speculative shot from outside of the box nearly beat home keeper at the near post, they almost claim a victory.
Middlezoy took the lead on the half hour when a fine cross was expertly glanced past keeper Sam Tarr by danger man Jed Williams.
And a few minutes later they were unlucky not to double the advantage when Charlie Lentell’s shot hit the underside of the bar and came out.
But Minehead weathered the storm and soon after half-time Ndiomo missed a glorious opportunity to level the scores when he failed to connect from within the six-yard box with the goal at his mercy.
Moments later, he turned from villain to hero when he was harshly awarded a penalty kick - much to the home side’s disbelief – and Jack Furse competently equalised from the spot.
With the game opening up towards the end, both sides had opportunities to grab all three points but no further goals were recorded.
Minehead: Sam Tarr, Matty Ronan, Matt Cracknell, Stephen Lynch, Mike Mullen (cap), Chris Newbold, Harry Scatchard, Felix Ndiomo, Damion Redman, Jack Furse, Max Smith.
l Minehead travel to Portishead Town Reserves tomorrow (Saturday) knowing that, from their final two games, they need three more points than second-placed Wells City Reserves, and a hatful more goals, to have a chance of gaining promotion.
Their final game is against Burnham United on Tuesday evening at Weston St John’s ground.
