WHEN many cricket clubs are facing declining participation and struggling to field teams, West Somerset League club Stogumber is bucking the trend.

Formed over 150 years ago the club is enjoying one of the its most successful periods with growth in all areas, including the reintroduction of a Second XI, creating opportunities for players of all ages and abilities to enjoy regular competitive cricket.

Just as exciting has been the continued growth of the junior section., which now boasts more than 70 children enabling Stogumber to field sides at Under 13 and 15 level - and very recently the Under 11s played their first match.

Seeing so many children representing Stogumber with enthusiasm and pride is a fantastic achievement for everyone involved in helping this come to fruition.

The club’s teams have enjoyed an outstanding season, with all the senior and junior sides sitting at or near the top of their leagues.

These results are testament to the hard work of players, coaches, volunteers and supporters, whose commitment has helped create a thriving club that continues to grow.

In an era where many clubs are finding it increasingly difficult to survive, Stogumber is demonstrating what can be achieved when a community comes together behind a shared passion.

Eli Hayes, the First XI captain, said: “I’m incredibly proud of what the club has achieved this season. Seeing five of our Under 15s in our Second XI on Saturday and the Under-11s playing their first game are all brilliant milestones.

“The performances on the field reflect the dedication shown throughout the club and wider community, from players and coaches to the many volunteers behind the scenes.

The captain added: “I think this shows that village cricket can, and must be more than just a game played by a few on a Saturday, it can be one of the pillars of a local community.”
