WITH three rounds of matches still to go this season, Minehead Thirds have already been crowned West Somerset Cricket League Division Three champions after beating Fitzhead Seconds in their latest match.

After choosing to bat first Fitzhead were bowled out for 50 in 14 overs, Renjeesh Krishaan claiming 5 wickets , Sreejith Anilkumar taking four with the other being a run out.

The Pirates notched up their 12th win of the campaign when they reached 51 for 3 in 12 overs - thanks to Sunil Vinayak who remained unbeaten on 19 and Finn Penny who was 15 not out.

It’s a big weekend ahead for Minehead Thirds who face Stogumber Seconds in the final of the WSCL Cup at Minehead CC on Sunday morning, starting at 11.00am.

Meanwhile Minehead Seconds enjoyed their third victory of the season when they beat their Frome counterparts by 20 runs in Division Three of the Somerset Cricket League.

After the hosts won the toss and chose to bat they posted 196 for 9 from their allotted 40 overs. Minehead were given a good start by their openers who added 48 for the first wicket, Jonah Hopkins making 27 and Dan Pearson 18. Wickets then tumbled before Brandon Rawle, who made 60 off 43 balls with 10 fours, and Charlie Taylor shared a fifth wicket partnership of 59 before the latter was out for 12, while later in the order Rob Spiers hit a run a ball 18.

Pick of the bowlers for Frome was Tom Richards who ended with 3 for 45 from his eight overs.

When the visitors replied they looked to be going well as openers Ian Pinchen with 39 and Richard Potter (57 off 84 balls with 5 fours) took the score to 92 when Rawle accounted for Pinchen. Potter and Ben Cooper (30) then added 46 for the third wicket when Potter was dismissed by James Griffiths. Wickets then fell regularly, with Griffiths proving himself to be difficult to play as Frome were all out for 176 in 38.5 overs. For Minehead James Griffiths ended with the impressive figures of 5 for 30 off 6.5 overs, while there were two wickets apiece for both Brandon Rawle and Jack White.

This coming weekend Minehead First XI are at home in the Premier Division of the Somerset Cricket League while both the Seconds and Thirds are without a game on Saturday.

The Seconds are next in SCL Division Three league action when they travel to take on Street Seconds on Saturday, 22nd August, while that same day Minehead Thirds host Over Stowey Seconds in Division Three of the WSCL.

This Sunday is a big day for the West Somerset Cricket League when they host their two cup finals at Minehead CC. First up at 11am is the final of the Stuart Allbut Memorial Shield between home team Minehead Thirds and Stogumber Seconds.

This is followed at 2pm by the final of the West Somerset Cricket League Cup between Stogumber and Watchet.

The bar at Minehead’s Luttrell Way ground will be open all day, with bacon rolls and coffee available until mid day after which burgers and chips will be on sale.

This promises to be a great day for West Somerset cricket so with the weather set fair why not go along and enjoy the occasion.
