SOPHIE Luff led from the front as Somerset bounced back to winning ways in the Vitality Blast with victory over previously unbeaten Surrey at the Oval on Sunday by 4 wickets, writes Richard Walsh.
The Somerset skipper opened the innings and stayed in place to see her side to victory with three balls of the match remaining,
After being put into bat in front of a large Oval crowd Surrey were restricted to 153 for 5 from their 20 overs, thanks to tight fielding and bowling display, with Liv Barnes the pick of the attack taking 3 for 21 off 4 overs, while Niamh Holland claimed 2 for 20 from 3.
When Somerset replied they found themselves struggling at 59 for 4 wickets in the ninth over , including that of Anika Learoyd, when the skipper was joined by Alex Griffiths. Together the fifth wicket pair added 41 in just under 5 overs when Griffiths was dismissed for 8 off 11 balls.
The captain was then joined at the crease by Chloe Skelton who made 11 from 17 balls and added 41 in 5.3 overs before she too was out with the total on 141.
New batter Ruby Davis who joined the professional ranks after coming through the Somerset Academy earlier this year, came out to the middle and it was the 21 year old who hit the winning runs to send the visitors back down the M4 with plenty to cheer about.
Sophie ended unbeaten on 82, her fourth innings over 50 in this years Vitality Blast, which came off 53 balls either 11 fours and one 6, while Ruby ended not out 5.
Somerset are next in action when they host Warwickshire in a double header at Taunton on Sunday 7th June starting at 11.30am.
