MINEHEAD Barbarians will be looking to take their home form with them when they play away to Avon in Counties Two Somerset tomorrow (Sat).

The Babas have won both their home games this season - against Wells and Imperial - but were second best at Taunton a fortnight ago.

The early season leaderboard shows Minehead in fourth spot after three matches with Avon seventh, having won one of their three fixtures, their only victory being last Saturday when they chalked up a 34-17 success at home to newly-promoted Huish Tigers.

Looking back on the Babas' win over Imperial, Minehead's head coach Mick Orton said: "Imperial are always tough opposition. Regardless of being home or away, they turn up ready to play and to beat them you must be at your very best.

"However, it was by no means a one-sided match. It was a tremendous effort, even to put on the game because of the heavy rain which fell."

Chew Valley and Taunton II have both made impressive starts to the season in this division, sharing top spot with 15 points from their opening three matches.

Minehead 2nd XV, who lost 12-10 away to Yeovil in Counties Four Somerset South last weekend, are home to Tor tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Wiveliscombe will be chasing their first victory of the season when they play at home to Pirates Amateurs in Counties One Western West (3p.m.).

Wivey have lost their opening three matches, while Amateurs have one success from three starts.

Wiveliscombe 2nd XV, whose home game against Tor last weekend was postponed because a lack of an official, are away to Castle Cary in Counties Three Somerset South. Wivey are ninth and Cary bottom.

Wellington 2nd XV also had their home game against Bridgwater & Albion last Saturday called off because of a lack of a referee. It is a problem which is causing increasing concern for clubs who rely on home matches to boost their coffers. It would appear to be a problem which will not be solved quickly.
