SIR — I write to support in the strongest possible terms David Shevels' letter (November 7). In the year when we are remembering the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of World War One, and the 75th anniversary of the outbreak of World War Two, I find it not only reprehensible but almost immoral that there is a party urging us to turn our backs on the organisation that has done more to bring European countries together to talk over our differences and negotiate compromises (that most British of concepts) instead of fighting. If you think going to war is no longer likely, look at the Russian inroads into Ukraine. I am aware that UKIP is anti-European immigration. In the last century, Mosely and the Fascists blamed the Jews for our economic troubles, Enoch Powell blamed Commonwealth immigrants, Margaret Thatcher blamed the trade unions, our present Government blames Benefit claimants and UKIP blame European immigrants. I don't wish to apportion blame but I do notice that while many people, especially in West Somerset, are experiencing economic hardship, the average salary of the CEOs of the top 100 companies is not £3.34 million, a 20 per cent rise since last year. I wonder how many of your readers have had a20 per cent rise on their much more modest pay. I know there are many aspects of the EU we don't like but when you belong to any organisation or community you have to accept its rules. Guess what! In the UK you mustn't drive on the right, cross red traffic lights or evade your income tax. So if we want the benefits of free trade, we have to play by all the rules, including the free movement of labour. Doug Ross, Ballfield Road, Minehead.
