THERE was a new class at Wootton Courtenay Gardening Club Flower and Produce Show held in the Village Hall on Tuesday, August 2 – men’s cake baking.

The organisers said the variety and quality of the produce shown was “astonishing” considering the dryness of the season and the show benches were full.

And they said there was a wonderful display of vegetables, flowers and cookery - “a credit to the village”.

Nigel Humphries had arranged for the show to receive annually for the first time the RHS Banksia Medal for the most points in the horticultural classes, which can only be won by the same person every third year.

There were some new exhibitors as well as experienced ones and the committee was delighted to note that the attendance was up on last year. The Rev Stan Marriot presented the prizes, Eddie Bishop conducted the auction of produce – and the committee worked tirelessly to make the show the great success it was.
