A PAIR of visitors to Exmoor had a narrow escape when they nearly drove their campervan over 900 feet high cliffs.
The couple had stopped in a car park near the Hurlstone Point beauty spot, close to Bossington, Porlock, and on Thursday morning (December 18) decided to drive closer to the sea.
However, after driving for about two miles off road, the vehicle became stuck on a footpath track on steeply sloping ground near a section of the South West Coast Path.
An emergency services call was made at about 8.40 am and police and two fire crews attended the scene.
A woman was able to self-rescue from the campervan while police helped her male colleague out of the vehicle.
Firefighters then helped the man back up the hillside and return to the car park.
An Avon and Somerset Constabulary spokesperson said: “No injuries have been reported.”
The South West Coast Path Association (SWCPA) warns visitors of the danger of the cliffs despite their breathtaking scenic views.
SWCPA advises walkers not to attempt the steep paths during bad weather, particularly if it is windy.
