SIR — We have sent the following letter to Cllr Colin Hill which your readers may be interested in:
A group of residents met on Monday evening, January 6, to form a focused contribution to public opposition to the proposed Minehead one way system (Janet Bond, Rodney Growden, Oliver Hardy, John Malin, Pearl Neal and Joe Passmore).
Our main concerns over this scheme are as follows:
l We cannot see why this disruptive scheme is necessary.
Village tree planting to follow repairs on fatal school coach crash road
New boundaries and 14 fewer councillors to be elected for Somerset Council next year
Minehead resort to stage fireworks & laser show as Butlin's celebrates 90th birthday
Police warning as aggressive rogue trader invades home of elderly Minehead residentsl It is widely acknowledged that the scheme will encourage increased vehicle speed and volume and will be dangerous to children and residents; it will also increase journey times, air pollution and noise.
l We understand there has been a substantial body of written and verbal objections, which we believe, has not been properly addressed.
l Many believe this scheme will have a detrimental effect on tourism, by making the town pedestrian unfriendly in addition to a profusion of untidy traffic signs in a conservation area.
l There has been inadequate consultation. At the January 23, 2002, meeting in the Methodist Hall the scheme was overwhelmingly voted out. At the public exhibition on April 12 and 13, the handout promised that 'a press release will be released within two months which will outline how the exhibition was received and the way forward'. We would like to know when and where this appeared.
We therefore ask the following questions:
l Which county council committee will decide the final approval for this scheme and when will it meet?
l How will the complaints about the scheme be dealt with, by whom, and when?
l Will all-relevant material be presented to the scrutiny committee?
l When will a proper opportunity be given to all concerned to state their views at a public meeting and what would be the status of this meeting in making the final decision?
