A TREE is to be given by Somerset Council to Cutcombe Parish Council for planting in the recreational ground in Wheddon Cross in memory of the tragic events last summer when a schoolboy died in a coach crash.
The tree will also mark ‘the remarkable resilience and unity’ shown by the community during and after the fatal coach crash on the A396 Cutcombe Hill.
The parish council is also considering installing a bench beside the tree to create a peaceful space for reflection.
The announcement was made as repairs were completed to the A396 on Friday (February 27).
Any remaining traffic management equipment and barriers on the road will be collected in the next few days as Somerset Council begins the final phase of demobilisation.
But, contractors will need to return at some time in the future to carry out permanent repairs to a section of verge on a straight stretch of road higher up the hill.
The verge was damaged by vehicle movements during snowy conditions earlier this winter and has only been temporarily made good.
Council assistant highway service manager Kali Martin said: “A long‑term engineering solution will be developed.
“However, due to the limited working window and the requirements for design, planning, and additional road closures, the temporary repair was the most practical option at this time.
“This approach has allowed us to safely remove the traffic management barriers that had been in place at this location.
“Over the next few weeks, a formal sign‑off inspection will be undertaken to identify and address any minor snags.
“These checks ensure the site is left in the best possible condition and that all aspects of the scheme meet the required standards.”
Mr Martin thanked residents, local businesses, and all road users for their patience, co-operation, and understanding while the three-week repair project was carried out.
