TOWN councillors in Watchet are backing a move to restructure the area’s education system.

A group of parents proposed switching from three-tier education to two, which would mean building a new secondary school into which local primary schools would feed.

Currently, pupils attend first school and move on to Danesfield Middle School, in Williton, before transferring at the age of 13 years to the West Somerset College, Minehead.

Parents say this adds to traffic congestion on the A39 to Minehead and disruption for pupils who have to adjust to new schools twice.

Now, Watchet Town Council has thrown its weight behind the move and called on Somerset Council to investigate establishing a two-tier schooling system.

It has asked the unitary authority to carry out ‘appropriate feasibility research’.
